Blooming Plum trees

Marianne,

I obviously see your column in the Sun. TNT.

Please answer a question that has been lingering for several years and no one I’ve asked has been able to answer.

There are many trees all over Tacoma and elsewhere, including Mt. View Cemetery, that are just covered with pink blossoms.

Some people think they are cherry trees. But, the blossoms are larger than the ones on cherry trees, and they are very pink, rather than pale pink or white.

I remember them as blooming plum trees from childhood. When I was in grade school, two women came to our home, in the Puyallup valley, and asked if my parents would like one of the trees planted in our yard next to the road. They were free. They had been donated by someone. They were also going to be planted in Tacoma.

So, the questions are, who donated the trees, who planted them, and when and how many and where?
What’s the story behind these blooming plum trees?

You can ask, but the Historical Society, nor Ciscoe Morris, knows anything about them, when I asked a few years ago.

Thanks,
Dennis

Well that is a fine horticultural mystery but sorry to say I have not heard about any donation of these trees nor can I guess about what variety they are without seeing a photo. I do know that the blooming plum trees flower earlier than the Japanese cherry trees but the cherry trees have very pink and larger flowers. If you want to explore this mystery further I suggest you contact someone at the Pt. Defiance park historical society. I seem to remember when they built the Japanese pagoda years ago they had a donation of trees. Let us know if you find anything out and Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
