Slug bait and how to get rid of slugs

You write in the newspaper about ‘bait for slugs’. Could you explain, please? I have quite a crop every year.

Marianne's Response

Slugs are enemy number one in my garden as well! Bait for slugs means to use any method to draw the slugs out and get rid of them. The best is a pet-safe slug bait called \"Worry Free\" or \"Sluggo\" that kills the slugs with iron phosphate and leaves no slimy slug bodies behind - the slugs eat the tiny white pellets then crawl home to hide and die. (Your soil may even benefit from the iron.) Other less expensive baits are beer placed in a shallow saucer, a grapefruit rind, or damp newspaper placed near tender plants or even laying a board as a walkway in a veggie garden, and then checking under this board to snip or stab the slugs you find. Some gardeners also go on slug patrol at night or early in the morning armed with snippers and catch the slimy critters on the undersides of leaves. Dry dog food has also been used as a bait to attract slugs. The easy way to gather up the culprits is to slip your hand inside a plastic bag and use this as a glove on large slugs, slipping them inside the bag and tying it closed before tossing in the garbage. Slugs are full of nitrogen and other organic matter however so if you have the fortitude to slice or pierce, add the dead slugs to your compost pile or bury them in the soil.
