Marianne's Response

Bougainvillea

I have two Bougainvillea‘s in different pots. The pots are terra-cotta and they are about 3 feet high. One of the Bougainvillea‘s is yellow and doing great without watering. The other seems to need water all the time. The leaves are always wilting until I water it. And from my understanding Bougainvillea‘s do better and bloom when they’re not watered. This has been ongoing since early spring.

Marianne's Response

Are the plants in the same potting soil and same size of pot? Do they get the same amount of sun? If all other factors are the same then it must be the yellow bougainvillea is a more drought tolerant variety.  Either that or something bored into the soil and destroyed some underground roots. A real mystery to me. Perhaps in the winter you can dig up the thirsty plant and check the roots for rot or damage. Sometimes a drainage hole can get plugged up and this causes root rot from poor drainage. A plant with root rot will look wilted. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
