Planting over compost

Can you plant on top of a compost pile?

Marianne's Response

Yes, but you must wait for the compost to cool or finish decaying so that the soil is no longer steaming. Some gardeners plant potatoes, tomatoes, or even flowering plants like clematis or perennials into old compost piles. Plants that like rich moisture retentive soil do best.
