To be honest, the cute butterfly houses sold as gifts are more decorative than anything else so hang yours where you will see it and enjoy it as garden décor. Mason bee homes are different as they really do provide needed nesting spots for the native blue bee. To encourage more butterflies it is more practical to plant pollen rich plants such as salvia, rudbeckias, buddleia and sedum 'Autumn Joy'  and to provide a shallow source of water for the butterflies such as in a saucer with stones in the bottom.
