Marianne's Response
Can I plant hardy gardenia bushes outside in the Northeast?
Just purchased “hardy” gardenia bushes here in NJ. Nursery says it’s okay to plant outside. True?

Maybe. Hardy gardenias may survive the winter in your zone if they are growing in a protected spot and well-mulched before winter hits. It is safe to set the gardenia plants outdoors now and enjoy them all summer and fall. Than you should decide how much of a gambling gardener you are. The fragrance of gardenias seems worth the risk to me even if the plants must be replaced each spring. You can also pot them up for patio fragrance and winter the potted gardenias indoors each winter.
Keep growing,
