Care of Yucca
My yucca is growing out over community sidewalk. Is there anything I can do to control it short of total removal?

Thank you for sending the image. To me it looks like you have a phormium not a yucca plant. Phormiums do not have barbs on the tips of the leaves the way that yucca plants do.
You did not mention where you live, but I will assume you live where there are mild winters as this foliage plant also called New Zealand Flax cannot handle long periods of freezing weather and rots easily in wet soil. You seem to have the perfect spot near a warm wall with good drainage. To be safe I suggest you wait until spring when the danger of frost is past and there is less rain that could rot the new growth. Use hand pruners or even strong scissors to cut the foliage down near the base of the plant. Work from the outside removing the oldest and lowest leaves first. This should give more room for walkers on the path. If you leave at least one third of the newest growth in the center of the plant your plant will have less stress but in some cases you can cut this plant all the way to the ground and new shoots will appear for a fresh start. For those gardeners that do have yucca plants, pruning is very similar. Wait until spring, remove the oldest leaves first by cutting them close to the main trunk. Always use eye protection and gloves as yuccas and phormiums can cause injury during the pruning operation. They don't mean to attack the gardener, they just don't know what's good for them. One more tip. In spring you can also uproot the entire plant and divide it up into several smaller plants. Consider moving these to an area where they have room to spread out and you won't need to worry about nipping at the heels of walkers on the community pathway. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
