caribsun’s Question

After pruning the forsythias, can the cuttings be planted to produce new plants? Thank you.

Yes - often the cuttings of forsythia and members of the willow and hydrangea family will root. To make it easier, first place the cut branches into a tall vase of water. After a few weeks you should see tiny roots form. When the roots are a few inches long pot up the branches and baby them over the summer in a cool spot. Plant into the ground before winter sets in or carry them over in the pot all winter in a protected spot and plant into the garden in the spring. Good luck, I take ten or twelve cuttings of all plants as maybe only one or two will survive this casual approach of plant propagation. With a greenhouse and by using a plant rooting powder (rather expensive) you will get a much higher rate of success. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
