I have the most horrible soil, I want to build a flower garden, what soil do I need to build up the dirt there?

You need compost. This is the stuff that improves clay soil, sandy soil and any soil. You can purchase bags of compost from a garden center or depending on where you live have a load delivered right to your home. Most flower gardens also need well-drained soil so be sure you don't use more than one half compost and one half regular soil. In rainy climates the compost can absorb and hold too much water for drought resistant plants like rudbeckias, sedums and verbena. Then be sure to use fertilizer such as a slow release Osmocote to get your plants blooming. Soil that is rich in compost often has nitrogen but is lacking in other essential nutrients that give flowers maximum bloom power. Now dig in and get ready for a colorful summer.
