How much Osmocote to use on potted plants

I bought Osmocote at the advice of a nursery owner to help make my Christmas cactus bloom. I’m confused about the instructions on the back of the label.

1) So I should use about 1/2 capful for 2 gal pot?
2) Do I only fertilize once every six months, or how often?
3) Do I use on all my indoor plants or is Miracle-Gro more appropriate?
4) When I plant my pots on my patio for spring, I mix this product into top 1-3 inch of soil. Then now often?

Thanks,
Carol

Welcome to gardening and congrats on being such a conscientious grower. The answers are: 1. Yes, half a cap for 2 gal pot or half a teaspoon for 6 in pot is fine. 2. You only need to feed once every 6 months as Osmocote releases nutrients slowly 3. All indoor plants benefit from Osmocote as does any plant that likes a slow and gradual release of nutrients. I do like Miracle-Gro for fast growing plants such as annuals and I often use the two together for potted annual plants. 4. In spring add the product to the potting soil and then you don't need to add more for six months. Remember that as the soil warms the Osmocote releases the nutrient a little bit at a time. This way the plants get a bit of fertilizer when they are young and the soil is cool but more is released in mid summer when they are growing fast and the soil is warmer.
