Marianne's Response

chezeve’s Question

Hi Marianne,
I need your expertise to settle a debate I’ve got going on the self-professed ” master gardener” Jerry Baker. Are his myriad tonics safe to use on your trees & garden?
I enjoy your site & I’ve been reading your column for years. I appreciate your service, it really helps.
Thanks for your time!

Marianne's Response

I know of Jerry Baker and I do not think any of his formulas will harm your plants. Many have some scientific reason for why they work - such as epsom salts do contain some nutrients that plants need. However others are less scientific and maybe more folksy and harmless than anything else. I suggest you check with your local Master Gardeners if you are concerned about a specific formula - I seem to remember him recommending Coca Cola for something.... and isn't he the one that says you should whack the trunks of your trees to get the sap flowing? My biggest concern is the safety of the ground water as what you put onto your garden soil ends up filtering down into our streams - so too much sugar may not be the best for our water supply. I did meet Mr. Baker at a garden show - he told me he was an \"outsider\" because his background is in law enforcement not horticulture but that his grandmother taught him to garden so he was going to stick with her wisdom instead of using the latest university or research based information. To each his own, Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
