Marianne's Response

Christmas tree

Hi I need your advice,I purchased a four foot Norfolk pine at Home depot. I have it in my kitchen right now. I hesitate to put it outside in the cold weather. we just had a lot of snow. do you think it would survive in the cold. it came from Costa Farms in Miami Florida. I called them at their 800 number. the woman told me to put it out eventually and it will get used to the cold. what do you think. I hate to put it out there and then have it die. I live in a small house and right now it is in my kitchen.

I strongly disagree with putting your Norfolk Island Pine tree outdoors as you must live in a cold zone as you mentioned snow. This tropical plant cannot survive temps below 35 degrees. It may survive in zones 10 and 11 outdoors but not if you try to grow it in a hurricane prone climate such as Florida. The wind can snap tall specimens in half.  Grow this plant as a houseplant indoors. You can let it sit on the patio in the summer but no cold drafts or blasts of warm air. It will grow quite tall if you keep transplanting it into a larger pot so to keep it dwarfed for indoor use grow it as a bonsai which means you can remove it from it's pot, trim back some of the roots and add fresh potting soil then replace back in same small container. This will stunt it's growth and needs to be done only every four to five years. Meanwhile, enjoy your indoor tree and don't forget to decorate it for Christmas. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
