It is best to prune both of these flowering shrubs in early spring - but you can prune the butterfly bush and the forsythia right now and they will both survive. Pruning after blooming is the general rule but if you prune shrubs in late summer you will be cutting off the flower buds that have already formed for next year. It is okay to get tough and discipline your overgrown shrubs in spring or fall.
