Clivia?
I live in Palm Springs Ca…..very hot! I want to plant clivia in my side yard. What time of year should I buy and plant the bulbs. How long before a bulb produces a flower?

Clivia needs shade especially in your desert region. Plant the rhizomes in the fall spacing them about 2 feet apart. This plant seems to bloom best when crowded together with other plants. Clivia also loves fertilizer so be sure to add a slow release plant food like Osmocote at planting time and again every spring to keep those beautiful blooms coming. The size of the rhizomes will determine at what age the plants will bloom. Usually the smallest bulbs or roots will take 3 years to flower but you can find larger rhizomes that could flower the first spring after a fall planting. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
