Is it OK to use railroad ties for a raised vegetable garden?

Yes, studies have shown that the creosote or wood preservative does not leach into plant roots but to be very safe I would not plant root crops like carrots right next to the ties. Leaf crops such as lettuce and kale would be my choice just in case a root might come in contact with the treated ties.
