Marianne's Response

Confederate jasmine

There is an unusual yellowish moss-like growth or something (?) on the stems of my new confederate jasmine plant. it is growing outdoors on a trelliss on a sunny wall. is this something that is part of the plant, or some fungus or a pest to be rid of. I am a gardener transplanted to Florida from Alaska so i am not familiar with southern gardening or plants. Thank you for your assistance!

Marianne's Response

Unless I see a photo or have a more detailed account of the growth I cannot be sure but my best guess is you have a harmless lichen growing on your jasmine. If the plant looks otherwise healthy and continues to bloom than no worries. You can pick off the growth if it bothers you and try not to water the foliage or stems of this vine to cut back on the lichen. Welcome to gardening in the warm weather, Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
