The best containers for roses should be deep to hold at least 2 feet of soil but 3 feet of soil is even better. Roses are thirsty and hungry plants so a container at least 24 inches wide is also needed. You can use clay, metal or plastic pots.  Use a potting soil not soil from your garden so that the roots do not become waterlogged in the pot. I like to use a commercial potting soil but for roses add one or two shovels of compost to help the potting soil hold onto moisture and nutrients. You can plant bare root roses in early spring or if your roses are growing in the ground wait until they are dormant this winter to transplant them into the containers. Roses need extra fertilizer when grown in a pot. Use Osmocote every spring by mixing the granules into the soil but also use a liquid plant food such as Miracle Grow after the first flush of blooms in June to encourage more flowers. Water when the top two inches of the soil feels dry. Full sun and good air circulation will help potted roses to resist disease. Good luck, Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
