Yes, I use Osmocote myself on my potted Japanese maple trees but I do not fertilize my full grown maple trees that look healthy.  Once a tree is mature and growing well it becomes quite good at getting all the nutrients it needs from it's extensive root system. Trees and shrubs in containers like a spring application of Osmocote. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
