Cucumber

How do you grow English cucumbers in Olympia, do they need to grow in a green house.

English cucumbers can be grown outdoors in zone 7 (Western Washington) but as they need at least 60 days of frost free growing time you will need to pay attention to planting the seeds as soon as the soil is above 65 degrees usually two to three weeks after our last frost. The site must be full sun with lots of organic matter in the soil and good drainage. If you have a greenhouse you can start the seed indoors in late April then set out the seedlings at the end of May. You can also buy already started plants from a nursery and transplant these into your garden bed or into a container once the weather has warmed in late May or early June. This is one vegetable that does well in a protected area near the house or even in a patio pot that gets full sun. I think the English cucumbers have more flavor than the tasteless cukes at the grocery store so have some fun and experiment with growing the English cucumbers this summer. You can order seeds now or find seeds at local nurseries. Ed Hume Seeds is a company that specializes in seeds for short season climates and cool summers so that would be a good place to start.
