cutting back a bush
Hi, I have 2 evergreen bushes or shrub in my front lawn that have overgrown their area.
There are some very long branches and snow heavy broken branches that I would like to trim and cut back.
I have noticed that some don’t grow back for a good while and I was wondering how much can I cut back. How far can I go?
I also have to Lilac “trees” that I would like to turn back into bushes without killing them, is that a possibility?
One last question, can I still prune and thin out my cherry tree?
Sorry for so many question, I am just not good at gardening.

Happy to help with your pruning questions. For the evergreens you can shorten the branches by at least one third now and remove anything else that is dead, diseased or damaged by following the branches to the source or trunk and sawing or clipping.
Your lilacs can be pruned after blooming and you can saw off the largest and tallest trunks at the base to encourage the newer growth and you can shorten branches again by one third or less but you will never be able to keep these mature lilacs short. They really want to be trees. There is a dwarf lilac called "Miss Kim" that might be a better option if you mush have a shorter lilac.
As for your cherry trees this is not the best time to prune as the sap is running and will drip but always remove any dead or diseased wood any time of the year. Winter or fall is a better time to prune your cherry trees.
Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
