Marianne's Response

cweb’s Question

Hi Marianne, living in Zone 4. Purchased some Bluebell grapes to plant as they were on an end-of-season sale.
Now I’ve read you plant them in late winter or early spring when dormant. Did I make a mistake? Can I still plant them this fall? I have no where to put them if not planted. They have fruit so they must be a two year old plant.

Thank you for any info you can give. Also, do I prune them this year when it gets colder?

Plant those grapes now. The sooner they get into the ground the better they will be at surviving their first winter. Prune I the winter such as February by shortening the branches that bear fruit - that would be the two year old spurs and train the main canes or branches onto horizontal supports as this encourages more side shoots which are the spurs that bear grapes. May you enjoy the fruit of the vine for many years to come. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
