CynScotland’s Question

About 75% of the needles on my weeping Blue Atlas Cedar are totally brown. There is some new growth at the ends of a couple of branches. I had this problem last year and cut off most of the brown needles and treated the limbs with a fungicide. I really don’t want to have to do that again this year. Any idea what is wrong and can it be saved? Thank you.

Marianne's Response

I suspect aphid not a fungus but in either case I have no good news. I have been trying to solve the problem of dying Blue Atlas Cedar for years and if you spray fungicide, miticide and a dormant oil to control aphid, nothing seems to stop the slow brown death once it starts. I suspect there is a blight that is in the soil. I ended up digging out my once beautiful weeping cedar. So try hosing down the tree with a strong jet of water, bringing a sample to a Master Gardener (in a zip lock bag - mites, aphid and fungi spread) and if you find any cure, please share! So sorry I could not be of more help but Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
