Large holes are the sign of slugs and snails (do you see slime? are the holes at the edges of the leaves?), or they could be the cabbage worm, which can make holes from the center as well as the side of the leaf. Go out early in the morning and check under the leaves of the plants for the green worms or the slugs or snails. Hand pick these pests and use a slug bait (Worry Free is a brand safe to use around food). Next year cover the plants with Reemay or agricultural fleece to keep the white cabbage moths from laying eggs on the young plants. When these eggs hatch, the green larvae begin to feed on your plants. Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and other members of the cole plant family are all very attractive to cabbage moths and should be kept covered every spring. Some gardeners build hoop houses over the row where cole crops are growing, At least the veggies are still edible. Just soak in salt water to dislodge any pests before you cook them.
