What type of rose plant are you growing? Climbing roses need to be tied to a support system to keep them off the ground, and low growing groundcover roses were bred to stay low and cover the ground. Shrub roses or landscape roses have also been bred to grow fast and may have floppy branches that touch the ground. Don't be shy about pruning off any wayward branches that grow in a direction you do not like. As long as you do not remove more than one third of the rose branches you can shape up rose plants with pruning during the spring or summer. I have seed upright, hybrid tea roses flop over and touch the ground if they are over fed (roses love fertilizer but follow the amounts recommended on the package) or if a wind storm breaks branches at the base of the plant.
