Marianne's Response

Dead rose bush

I have a rose bush in front of my house. There are roses blooming. However, there are a lot of stems or branches that look dead. The buds are dried up and there are no leaves on them. Should I cut them? If so, how should I do so?

Yes. Always remove any branch that is dead, diseased or damaged any time of year. Use sharp garden hand pruners and follow the dead branches down into the plant and make your cut where the dead part joins the living section of the plant. Then the whole brown branch will come out as one section. Your rose plant will not only look better but removing the dead parts will allow more air circulation into the plant for better health. You can also use long handled loppers to remove dead sections if there are lots of thorns and you don't have any thick gloves. Lovely orange rose by the way. Reward it with some fertilizer and you'll have blooms all summer. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
