Marianne's Response

When to plant baby’s breath

My daughter is getting married in September. She would like to grow baby’s breath and be able to use it at the wedding. When is the best time to plant it for a mid-September harvest? I live in central New Jersey.

There are several types of baby's breath, but they all like hot, dry locations, so first make sure you have the right spot. You should buy perennial plants now and plant immediately. In your area it will not be easy to produce a large crop. Summer rains can ruin a display, so have a backup plan. You may even want to cover the clumps with umbrellas to keep them dry.
