Marianne's Response

Deer proof gardens

My yard is mostly shaded. I have a lit of hostas and hydrangeas. These are like candy to deer. Can you suggest any shade tolerant deer resistant plantings.

Marianne's Response

Your garden looks lovely in the photo. I suggest brunera in the place of hosta and also hardy geraniums, mahonia, ferns and hellebores for your shade. But deer will taste anything. I just invested in a deer fence and gate for my own garden after sharing my plants for 34 years. Daffodils and lamiums are two more plants they do not eat. You may want to check out a book on deer resistant gardening for a more extensive list. Karen Chapman wrote "Deer Resistant Design" and this book is available on Amazon. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
