It sounds like you have a gall (the Q-tip bump) caused by an insect (the spider you see inside) and the natural remedy is to prune off all infected parts of the plant and do not compost the pruning crumbs. Then just keep the plant healthy and clean up around the base of the plant so that no insects from below will overwinter and reinfect the plant. You can also add a few inches of wood chips around the base of the shrub to seal in any insect eggs that may have fallen on the soil.
