Disease on tree bark
The trees in the yard have bark that looks like it has been burned by fire all black on one side

Would the one side that is black be the shaded or north side of the tree? That could just be mold growing on the cool side of the tree trunk. Perhaps if you sent a picture I could make a better diagnosis of the problem. If the trees are healthy I would not worry about some discoloration of the bark. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
