Marianne's Response
Best plants to attract hummingbirds
I am trying to create a hummingbird garden in Southern VA. I was wondering if you would have any advice as to what plants to plant and ideally where it should be (sun or shade). They come here in April and May.

What a wonderful garden you will have. Start with early bloomers like pulmonaria and hellebores and then look for flowering plants with tubular flowers such as thungbergia or black-eyed Susan vine, salvia, fuchsia and petunias. Plant a mix of brightly colored flowers in both sun and shade and the hummers will be delighted with your new garden. For more detailed planting plans check out the book \"Hummingbird Gardens\" by Nancy Newfield and Barbara Nielsen and published by Chapters publishing. You can find it on Amazon.com.
Keep growing,
