dogluvr’s Question

We had a beautiful maple tree that provided plenty of shade on the south side of our home. We were told it should be cut down because the roots were so big and were growing toward the foundation of our home. After the tree was cut, we were told to drill about 20 holes, 2″ deep and then buy a 5 gallon container of kerosene to pour in the holes to make sure the roots would be killed and not encroach on the foundation. It’s been about a year and we would really like to replace the tree. We know the tree will take time to grow, but we would really like the shade back that it provided. What is the best type of tree to get that will grow fairly quickly, provide shade and have shallow roots so they won’t grow into the foundation.

I vote for a well behaved Cornus Kousa or Korean Dogwood as they have smaller roots. The smoke tree or Cotinus coggygria is a much smaller tree but it is wide and has purple leaves. Just avoid maples, birch and willows.. You may want to consider a fast evergreen such as laurel or arborvitae as well. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
