Marianne's Response
dogluvr’s Question
I have a ton of Shasta Daisy plants. Now that the daisies have died, I started dead-heading them. I was told by our landscaper to deadhead them and then to cut down to the bottom in Oct/Nov. Would it be better to cut them down now instead of just dead-heading them or should I wait til Oct/Nov to cut them back? I live in Roy WA

I would wait until the leaves of our Shasta Daisies start to yellow. The flowers may have faded but the foliage is helping to make the roots stronger for next year's blooms. Now here is a time saver - even if you don't dead head your daisies will bloom well next year. You can just wait until October and use the weed whacker or string trimmer to mow all the foliage and old flowers down to within six inches of the ground. You can even leave the mess as a mulch over the winter - if you can stand the mess. Fall is also a good time to dig, divide or share your plants with other gardeners. Nothing is as sweet as a daisy on a summer day in the garden. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
