How to care for golden currants

Hi, Marianne! For Earth Day, I received a golden currant sapling from Haggen. The little planting guide they gave me is for a shore pine. Can you tell me in what conditions my golden currant would be most happy?

Thank you!

Happy to help! Your golden currant is easy to care for as long as you don't over-fertilize, or grow it in a spot with poor drainage. It will thrive in full sun, part sun, or a mostly shaded spot. If you need to control the sixe, prune when the plant is dormant or leafless such as early spring. Currants do appreciate a mulch on top of their roots so after planting add a few inches of wood chips or bark chips to seal in the moisture, keep out weeds and regulate the soil temperature. I like to grow deep purple foliage plants next to golden foliage plants so consider a bedmate of Japanese maple, red barberry, or a deep purple heuchera nearby. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
