Early blooming Rhody?
Hi Marianne! I love seeing the early blooming rhododendrons in early winter, here in Gig Harbor. Could you advise as to the name of this rhody, or where I might find it? Much thanks, as always! CM

In Western Washington if you enjoy the pink flowering rhododendron that blooms in March it is most likely "Christmas Cheer" and if you enjoy the purple rhodie with the smaller and darker foliage it is most likely the PJM rhododendron. There are many others that flower early and a trip to the Rhododendron Species Garden in Federal Way or a visit to a large nursery will be able to inspire you with more early bloomers. The two I mentioned are just the most common. Team up the rhododendrons with early flowering forsythia in the back ground and perennial hellebores at the base and you will have a color explosion in early spring when we all are looking forward to more color. Plant some early flowering bulbs such as snowdrops and crocus in this area and you'll add another layer of early spring charm. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
