What to do when your garden won’t grow

I have a small home garden about 8’x20′ and I have been growing the same veggies for about 20 years: tomatoes, basil, squash, eggplants, and peppers. I’ve always had good luck with them. The last couple of years were not too good. My basil would die off in a few weeks, eggplant would flower but not fruit, and tomatoes get some kind of blight. I know you are supposed to rotate, but I don’t have the room. Any suggestions?

Sound like you need a spring pick me up. Remove all plants in the fall and leave the soil bare for a month to expose it to the elements. Then add a 3 to 4 inch layer of fresh compost or well rotted manure and let this sit until February. When spring arrives and the soil can be worked dig this into the top 12 inches of your soil and you should have increased vigor next summer. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
