Very unusual as hosta are tough perennial. Where do you live? A winter that is too color or summer that was too hot will kill the roots of hosta. Dig in and see if you find any root remains. perhaps you could try growing hosta in a pot to protect the roots. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
