Fertilizer for Stellar Ruby Magnolia

Hi Marianne,
what is the best fertilizer for a Stellar Ruby Magnolia. I am plant sitting one for my daughter who is moving into a new house in Seattle. The plant was in the markdown area when shopping today, and looks like it needs some tender loving care although the yellow leaves aren’t dry or dropping off. Should I fertilize it while it’s still in the nursery container? It may be a few weeks before my daughter can get it planted.
Thank you (and thanks always for the information you share. Love Planter’s Place!)

I recommend a slow release plant food such as Osmocote at planting time for your struggling magnolia. I suspect the yellow leaves are more from weather and being forced to live in a pot than from lack of nutrients. Wait until you move this plant into the ground to mix the fertilizer into the soil and water well. Just keep the pot watered until planting time and be prepared to break up the root ball a bit if it shows signs of being pot bound. The Ruby Magnolia is a lovely tree so congrats on your rescue. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
