Marianne's Response
Fertilizer/Soil
Curious as to why some of my produce has large tops and small bottoms. The garlic has rather large stalks and small garlic heads. The garlic stalks are at least twice as large as what I see on the internet. The same seems to be true with the turnips. Very large plants and small turnips. The garlic will be harvested in about a month. I have used an organic fertilizer, a month later I used a 16-16-16, then for the last month I have used Miracle Grow every 10 days. Any advice.

You may be overfeeding. Garlic and turnips are not heavy feeders so a rather sandy soil is fine. When root crops have an excess of phosphorous and nitrogen they can use it to thicken up stems. Try feeding just once in the spring using a slow release plant food. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
