First, I always approve of boyfriends that give living plants as gifts. Second, it is possible that your bromeliad will still flower. It has a blooming spike, but looks like it just stopped trying to open. I suggest you add some fertilizer and see what happens. Do not use a high nitrogen or \"house plant\" fertilizer. A quick acting liquid plant food such as Miracle Gro or a slower acting application of slow release Osmocote will contain the proper micronutrients that your bromeliad may need to initiate flowering. This plant also needs sunlight so no matter how much you fertilize it will not open the flower spike if it does not get enough light. If you are giving it sunshine, then fertilizer is the next thing to try. Move the plant outdoors to bright shade for the summer and this may force the spike to open and flower.
