Fertilizing raised vegetable beds
I recently heard you speak at the Capitol City Newcomers Club in Tumwater and very much enjoyed your talk. You kindly gave me a packet of Osmocote for answering a question! I’ve never used it before and was wondering how it is used before planting in my raised vegetable beds. I usually add steer manure to the bed and then Plant Tone as I plant seeds or starts. Since Osmocote is sustained release is that a better choice for my beds? How would I apply it to larger areas? Thanks! Kathy

Osmocote is great for raised beds and I use it on my veggies with great results. Just sprinkle the contents of the sample pack around the base of one tomato, squash, cucumber or other plant that form flowers then vegetables as these are the heavier feeding edibles that will most benefit from additional fertilizer. Work the product into the top inch of soil lightly following the amount recommended on the package. I like to wait until the plants are a few inches tall before adding the Osmocote but you can also work it into the soil at the time you plant seeds. Plants that we harvest the leaves for food such as lettuce, spinach and herbs also benefit from Osmocote but they do not show as dramatic results as the "heavy feeders" that crave more nutrients. Thanks for coming to the talk and Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
