The practical suggestion is to not plant grass in a very shady spot. You are fighting Mother Nature here and she will win. Instead use stepping stones to manage the muddy spot and plant a shade loving groundcover such as ajuga or pachysandra to cover the ground. Large boulders can add more texture.
