Fescue or Zoysia

In North Alabama a very shady side backyard, would the dark fescue or shady tolerant zoysia be durable. I hate this muddy spot! I haven’t had much luck with fescue but rye grass in winter works wonderfully!

The practical suggestion is to not plant grass in a very shady spot. You are fighting Mother Nature here and she will win. Instead use stepping stones to manage the muddy spot and plant a shade loving groundcover such as ajuga or pachysandra to cover the ground. Large boulders can add more texture. A visit to a local nursery will give you more plant ideas that will tolerate heavy shade in your climate. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
