Marianne's Response
Fig trees fail to fruit for a number of reasons. It could be too young or your growing season is too short, lack of sun or lack of pollinators or not enough heat. Fig trees like a nice warm climate with sunny days and warm nights. They will not survive the winter outdoors in a planting zone with freezing winters so if you are from the Chicago area you will need to bring your tree indoors to a protected shed or greenhouse. Some varieties are more hardy than others. Perhaps the best thing to do is give your tree another couple of years to see if it matures and forms fruit after you fertilize with Osmocote in the spring. Your local Master Gardeners will also be of help with local growing conditions and what should be done for winter protection. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
