Our Fig Tree Looks Diseased

Our fledgling fig tree was looking beautiful about 2 weeks ago but just a few days ago I saw at least a dozen leaves on the ground and the rest on the branches were turning yellow with brownish. Is there something we can do to save it and the 3 small figs that are growing?

It could be too cold. You did not mention where you garden, but figs usually grow in zones 7 to 10 so if you live where winters get cold (or below 15 degrees) the leaves will drop as the tree goes into dormancy and tries to survive. The figs are ripe when the necks of the fruit shrivel but if a frost is expected you can harvest those three figs and store them indoors to see if they will ripen. A mulch of wood chips or pine bark that is two to four inches deep will help to protect the roots over the winter. You can expect two harvests a year one in early summer from the previous year's growth and another in late summer. For this reason, do not prune all the branches of your fig tree in the fall. On young trees remove any awkward branches in the winter but leave three to four of the best-placed branches. The goal is an open tree form with well-spaced branches. Time will tell if your fig tree is tough enough to survive the first winter and if it does get ready for a mature tree that gives up to 40 pounds of fruit a year. You might need to learn how to dry figs. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
