Advice on Fire Light Hydrangeas?

Hello, we planted some fire light hydrangeas two months ago. They are starting to bloom nicely, however we are getting yellow leaves. We read where that can be caused by too much or too little water, so it’s confusing. We don’t water when it rains. Otherwise, about three times a week. The bushes are not drooping, but we are concerned. A friend said if they yellow on the bottom, that means too little water. If they yellow on top, too much water. Well, we have some yellow on top and bottom. We would really like to keep these healthy. Can you advise on fire light hydrangeas? Thanks very much.

My guess is too much water. Three times a week sounds like a lot. Yellow leaves can also be due to heat stress or too much shade. Feel the soil by poking a finger down to the second knuckle. If it is at all moist do not water. Do not fertilize stressed plants either. You did not mention where you live. The Hydrangea paniculata like FireLight will take full sun or part shade but does not do well in desert climates or very humid climates. If the bushes are not dropping and started to bloom  then I am optimistic that your hydrangeas will survive and adjust. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
