“Florist” Azaleas
I gave my wife a beautiful pink double blossom azalea for Mother’s day. I would like to plant it in our garden. It looks healthy but the wood seems spindly. It is about a foot tall and a foot and a half wide. Any tips on how to promote success.

Your lovely, double azaleas can adapt just fine to your outdoor garden depending on where you live. Most florist azaleas are grown in a greenhouse so they cannot handle cold winter weather such as below 40 degrees. The best location is where it will get morning sun and afternoon shade. Add lots of organic matter such as compost to the planting hole and keep the soil moist at all times. Azaleas do not like to dry out and have very dense roots. A mulch on top of the roots such as wood chips will help to seal in moisture. Use a slow release plant food such as Osmocote near the roots at planting time feeding only once a year. You can trim the plant down by one inch or two to promote thicker growth. Only prune in the spring right after the plant finishes flowering. Good luck and Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
