flower garden

How do I prepare the soil for a 7 foot by 9 foot flower garden? I have put down new top soil.

I am not sure what type of flowers you want to grow, but most plants will do well if you add 6 to 8 inches of compost mixed with topsoil and dig this into the top one foot of soil by turning over the topsoil into the subsoil. Do this in the fall and let it sit all winter and the weather will help to loosen things up. Cover with a leaf or wood chip mulch this fall to keep out weeds. Then in the spring work the mulch or leaves into the soil, rake level and plant with a slow release plant food like Osmocote. The Osmocote will provide nutrients for up to six months. If you do not add such a deep layer of compost you can still grow a great garden but you will need to water more often and add a bit more Osmocote. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
