Hydrangeas are easy plants to transplant and add to the garden but dig a hole as deep as the pot it comes in but twice as wide. Loosen the soil in the bottom and sides of the hole. If your soil is sandy or rocky add compost or steer manure to the backfill so the hydrangea is surrounded with soil that will hold moisture. Mix in a slow release plant food like Osmocote into the top few inches of soil. Hydrangeas like a location where they are shaded from the hot afternoon sun. Firm the soil around the base of the plant with the heel of your hand, do not stomp on the soil with your foot as this will compact it. Be sure to water slowly after the transplant to settle the soil around the roots and the first summer your hydrangea will need extra water so keep the soil moist. Congratulations - hydrangeas are one of my favorite shrubs and I even have an outdoor hydrangea \"room\" in my own garden where hydrangeas form the wall. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
