Marianne's Response

Follow up to my Agapanthus question

Thanks for your response to my first question about my Agapanthus Blue MidKnight. You had said in your reply that I was lucky in my zone 8 garden to have even one flower and that the groups were possibly too small yet to produce much. I did go ahead and scratch in some Osmacote Plus. These were in containers several years ago in Enumclaw and thrived. Would they possibly grow better if they were in containers ? Maybe partially buried in the ground, or not? And, if so, what type of container?

Yes, most people have better luck in your zone growing agapanthus in pots as then the plants will warm up sooner in the spring and you can move the pots under cover in the winter if it is really rainy or into a protected area if a deep freeze is predicted. Clay pots would be best as they can absorb the heat and breathe but ceramic is also good. Plastic pots would not be ideal unless they are black to absorb more heat. Partially buried in the ground is also good as long as you remember to offer some protection like a covering with a tarp if a deep freeze is expected. Good luck and Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
