Full Sun on Rhodies
I lost a tree and now my rhodies have full direct Southern exposure. Any suggestions?

The good news is that even shade-loving shrubs should develop a "tan" on their foliage and adjust after a few months in full sun. Meanwhile, a light wood chip mulch and extra water during the dry times this summer will help them with the transition. You could also transplant them, as even large rhododendrons are easy to move with compact root systems. Replace with sun-loving shrubs like the Spiraea 'magic carpet' or compact evergreens. Consider all the great options open to you now that you have more sunshine. Tip: Azaleas with red flowers and darker green leaves, such as Hino Crimson azaleas, accept the most sun. For rhododendrons, the dark red with dark leaves such as Jean Marie thrive and bloom well in full sun. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
