Identifying grasses for seed purchase

I would like to know the name of the grass growing in my yard so I can buy the seed. It grows in mats, spreading outward slowly. It has a very fine blade, is medium green, and about 2-4″ in height. It prefers shade but grows in the sun if watered regularly. I think its a fescue, but which variety? I don’t want to buy a mixture of fescues because I don’t like the wide bladed dark green variety.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Margaret, I wish I could help you but it is very difficult to name a grass seed from a description. I suggest you buy a seed mix with a fine fescue as part of the mix and then over seed the entire lawn. This way you will be less likely to have a patchy look. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
